St. John's Youth Group
St. John's Youth Group began in the summer of 1997 after a small group of teens attended their first summer youth conference at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.
Upon their return, they decided that they needed to keep the "spirit" alive, so they began meeting on a weekly basis. Their focus is mainly on social concerns. They have helped with flood relief and clean up in the southern part of the state, joined in pro-life day at the legislature, and the community's anti-pornography march. Other activities in which the group participates include collecting donations for the local food pantry on Super Bowl Sunday, working the 5 weekly fish fries during Lent, participating in joint youth group meetings with a neighboring Catholic parish, and cleaning up our parish cemetery.
The group acquired a new meeting place. It is a small apartment above a garage. They call it "The Upper Room." Early in the spring of 2004, Bishop Bernard Schmitt visited Summersville to bless this area of meetings and prayer.
The future vision for The Upper Room is to provide a place where local school kids can go after school for homework help, tutoring or just to hang out with their friends in a safe, supervised, and caring environment.
